How adaptive reuse could contribute to achieving a carbon-neutral future

Introducing the environmental, social, and cultural contributions of adaptive reusing existing buildings and open spaces.

Haoran is a landscape architect and a studio director creating distinct and bold experiences that are meaningful and inspirational to the place and inhabitants.Haoran is always trying to create “habitats” bringing emotions that deeply resonate with inhabitants’ past experiences and inspiring a new wave of lifestyles, which in turn changes the way people understand the built environment. With Haoran’s creative direction, landscape architecture heals, inspires, and connects. He led the landscape design of Lawrence J. Ellison Institute at USC for Transformative Medicine that brought inner peace to a scientific hub and became a green habitat for both patients and researchers. Haoran is also inspired by sites’ history and story. He worked to create a post-industrial-inspired open space and landscape in ROW DTLA that deeply resonate with arts district’s heartbeats in Los Angeles. Haoran has also brought Hollywood spirit to the design of the Television City 2050 master plan, guiding design decisions that help curtail global warming, protect cultural diversity and biodiversity, and achieve social equity.Inspired by the heartbeat of nature and colorful cultures around the world, Haoran’s diverse background and international perspective have led his project footprint to other parts of the world outside the U.S. Haoran is also consistently engaging in academia by teaching and lecturing at USC’s landscape program.
