Maria Walker

Warren and Mahoney

Talk topic: Just A Phase: The growth of mycelium bio-composites.

Recently named NZGBC’s Future Thinker of the Year, Maria works across multi-disciplines as both an intermediate architectural graduate at Warren & Mahoney, as a computational designer, and as an active researcher on biomaterials and mycelium bio-composites: a mushroom and waste-based building material. Building upon her internationally recognised thesis on the role senso-aesthetics and disgust play in influencing the market uptake of mycelium bio-composites, she is now investigating the key drivers and barriers for novel biomaterials in Aotearoa’s built environment. Key queries in her work revolve around temporality, transformational change, and the role experience and holistic value can play in influencing people’s perceptions of materials.

The key topics Maria plans to address are:

  • Introduction to biomaterials, biocomposites – and specifically, mycelium biocomposites:
  • (what is it, mechanical performance, current uses / technologies)
  • Addressing key drivers for use of biomaterials:
  • Addressing key barriers to uptake:
  • (industry attitudes towards durability / temporality; testing; working with tolerances)
  • Where to next?
  • (opportunities for computational / parametric design; uptake models)

Mariana Cabugueira

Wilder World

Talk topic: The Metaverse and what that means for Architecture

MARIANA CABUGUEIRA is an Architect and Urban Designer from Portugal, having worked for over 5 years as a Senior Architectural Designer at Zaha Hadid Architects and currently working as the Director of Architecture for the metaverse company Wilder World. Mariana has tutored digital design and modelling at the Architectural Association, Design Research Laboratory in London, at Live Academy in Dubai, Futurly and currently holds her own studio with PA Academy. Graduated from the School of Architecture in Lisbon and the Politecnico di Milano, she moved to London to explore design and technology through the Postgraduate course: Design Research Laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association School (AA)

Her research interests gravitate around Parametric Design; Generative Design; Digital Design and Robotic Fabrication. Her final project proposes a cluster of towers, radically different but biologically similar, in the centre of London. Mariana joined Zaha Hadid Architects after graduating from the AA School in 2017. She was part of the Competition cluster for 5 years and the designer of winning projects such as: Navi Mumbai Airport; Western Sydney Airport; Exhibition Centre Beijing; the competition and completion of Tower C in Shenzhen. Currently Mariana is designing the metaverse with Wilder World. She holds the title of the Architect Director of the Meta Future Era.
