Event Description

Synopsis: Rena Simon, Principal at ZGF Architects, will present the design process behind the Portland International Airport Main Terminal Expansion, highlighting the pivotal role of physical models in driving timber innovation and shaping a distinctly Pacific Northwest experience that evokes a walk in a forest. Model-making is deeply ingrained in ZGF’s design culture, and the creation of PDX’s sweeping curved timber form was no exception. The team moved between analog model studies and digital modelling, allowing them to iterate rapidly, refine concepts, and ultimately optimise the design and construction of a monumental 9-acre wooden roof.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore how design strategies were established to celebrate the quality of light in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Understand how timber can solve technical problems and establish a strong connection to people and place.
  • Learn how the use of physical models can facilitate discovery, innovation, and communication.
