Meet Dan Coe

“What sets us apart is ethics.”

“From manufacturing and product quality to environmental responsibility and representation, our core values are what define us as leaders in the bathroom ware space,” says Dan Coe, of Paterson Trading Company.

In his role as National Commercial Manager, Dan oversees commercial project specification and product education, informed by more than a decade of industry experience. “I’ve always been passionate about design, function and innovative technologies,” he says. “Over the last 12 years, I’ve spent my time learning various aspects of design including flooring, natural stone systems, kitchen design, and bathroom design. This range of experience has helped me to really understand clients’ needs, whether in a single dwelling or a multi-residential property.”

For more than half a century, Paterson has been providing quality bathroom ware that delivers on both design and functionality. “We helped pioneer the thermostatic shower mixer market in New Zealand and were instrumental in introducing a number of world designers and design trends into the Kiwi bathroom. Maintaining integrity in genuine quality products has been a key driver to our success,” Dan says.

Premier brands including Villeroy & Boch and Fima elevate the product line and enable Paterson to draw on decades of international design experience. “Since 1955, Paterson has brought European product expertise to the NZ market. Villeroy & Boch have been a key supporter of ours for over 45 years with their German-quality ceramic toilets, wash basins, and Quaryl baths. They have been enthusiastic pioneers in design, material selection, and quality manufacturing since 1748, with family members still active in key roles in the company many generations later. They bring centuries of institutional knowledge to their ceramic sanitaryware, tiles and tableware, and their corral of award-winning designers means that the products not only look good but have great form and function.

“Fima is a great family-owned company that is small enough to be responsive quickly to design trends but large enough to genuinely develop its own program of innovative, Italian-designed products with exceptional quality and finishes. The manufacturing plant uses photovoltaic power, creating products that are low-lead brass while also implementing a strong brass-shaving recycling program. Their innovative trivalent galvanic system is environmentally and people-friendly, unlike the common hexavalent chrome-plating process. Fima packaging has been developed to optimise volume and weight to avoid waste and extra shipping costs. In addition, their products have specific flow restriction devices.”

Paterson is showcasing these products in a number of recent and ongoing apartment projects including Alexandra Park, Satori, Seascape, and Habitat. “Our Villery & Boch and Fima brands are a great fit for these types of projects because they offer the client a wide selection of toilets, basins, tapware and baths with designs, models and colours for just about any quality project. We have been able to meet the design brief for some of the most prestigious New Zealand developments, enabling the design teams to fulfil their clients' demanding requirements. The result is a finished look that is not only good upon completion but features products that will continue to function correctly and keep their beauty for many years to come.”

The Paterson Trading Co. team has also recently completed work on a high-profile refurbishment project at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa. “Te Papa required a high degree of functionality with a focus on robustness. The museum is compact on the world scale, but it is one of the most visited attractions in the Southern Hemisphere with over 1.5 million guests annually. This means their spaces get a real hammering, especially when there are cruise ships in town and the visitor numbers really peak! The bathroom products selected had to be efficient and able to withstand very high peak usage. The basins had to fit within the new bathroom cubicle layout whilst still being practical to use.”

As Paterson looks to the months ahead, Dan says the team is excited to launch new CPD content with Teulo so they can help new and experienced architects, designers and licenced building practitioners to better understand, specify and work with Paterson’s products. “People are also always welcome to call in for a coffee at our showroom in Auckland, or to explore our products at one of many nationwide plumbing merchants.”
