“Despite the global influence of social media and international publications, we prioritise staying true to each project’s local vernacular and context,” says Andrew Craig, Director of Auckland-based Leuschke Group Architects. “We love incorporating local materials, building techniques and cultural influences to create authentic and meaningful designs. While we embrace new ideas and technologies, we integrate them respectfully and appropriately within the local context to create timeless and contemporary designs that are beautiful, functional, sustainable and meaningful.”
Over the last 30 years, Leuschke Group has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading architecture practices which, Andrew says, is due partly to their commitment to building strong relationships. “We take the time to understand our client’s needs and aspirations, resulting in a high level of repeat business and a reputation for excellence. We're passionate about creating value for our clients through good design, and we're always striving to exceed their expectations and generate both enhanced value and design quality.”
Leuschke Group’s portfolio is hugely diverse, from luxury residences to boutique commercial projects. Andrew says the team prides themselves on their ability to understand and exploit the constraints and opportunities of each individual site. “Our design approach values uniqueness and careful consideration of the site and context for successful design. We bring diverse perspectives and expertise to every project, prioritising functionality and beauty that enhances the Kiwi lifestyle. We analyse each site thoroughly to establish a foundation for our designs and use locally sourced materials wherever possible to create a sense of place. Our philosophy centres on thoughtful, site-specific designs that meet the client needs and respond to the environment.”
Sydney native Andrew says he’s always been drawn to the architectural world. During his studies, he had the opportunity to learn from several prominent architects and artists who have deeply influenced his work including Australian landscape painter Lloyd Rees and renowned architects Glenn Murcutt, Peter Stutchbury and Neil Durbach. Their perspectives instilled in him a curiosity about integrating the built environment with the landscape, focusing on site context and prioritising natural, local materials. “Each of these architectural luminaires influenced me. Their early influences have formed the key principles that continue to guide my approach to architecture. After studying at the University of Sydney, I gained valuable experience working on challenging projects in both Sydney and London. In 1997, I relocated to New Zealand, where I've developed a deep appreciation for the country's natural beauty and unique architecture.”
Leuschke Group’s currently has several high-profile projects underway, including Auckland’s Victoria Lane Apartments and Central Otago’s Mt Cardrona Station. “Victoria Lane Apartments is a luxury development in Auckland’s affluent Remuera suburb, which consists of 23 apartments designed with a focus on quality, comfort and luxury. Its prime location provides residents easy access to the city's best restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping destinations while maintaining peace and privacy. The thoughtful design offers functional layouts with high-quality finishes to create luxurious yet liveable spaces. Construction is ongoing, and we’re aiming for a high standard of completion later this year."
“We’re also excited to have a project under construction at Mt Cardona Station in Central Otago, a new land subdivision that has been master-planned for over 15 years. One of its significant features is the landmark central facility known as The Homestead. It comprises four buildings that provide modern and sophisticated resort-style facilities accessible throughout the year. We believe this development will offer residents access to breathtaking natural beauty and world-class facilities that will enhance their quality of life.”
The realisation of his client’s vision is what most inspires Andrew’s work, he says. “Design is a fulfilling journey for me, from collaborating closely with clients and incorporating their unique needs and requirements into the project, to balancing them with site constraints and the natural environment. Seeing the vision come to life and progress from concept to construction is rewarding. The completed building's ability to enhance the lives of its occupants is the most satisfying aspect of the design process for me.”
Leuschke Group is excitedly expanding its presence in Queenstown and looking ahead to future opportunities for growth. “We're very proud of all our work, but there's always room to achieve more. We believe that the Queenstown area is somewhere where our expertise in custom, site-specific designs will be put to good use. We're committed to building strong relationships with local partners and collaborators who share our values and approach to design. Our goal is to continue evolving as a company, while staying true to our values of exceptional design and client service, and we're looking forward to new challenges and opportunities.”
