Julian Lienhard: 

BIO: Julian Lienhard is a structural engineer and since 2019, head of the Institute for Structural Design (TWE) at the University of Kassel. His interest in innovative and resource-efficient structures is positioned at the intersection of research and development and practice.In 2008, Julian co-founded the engineering and design practice studioLD now str.ucture GmbH. His scientific interest in the principles of lightweight structures goes along with various realized experimental structures and prototypes along his academic and professional career. This forms the basis of his research and international structural engineering consultancy as a recognized specialist in lightweight and special structures. In pursuit of efficient solutions for both digital modelling and the actual construction, Julian is at the forefront of discovering hybrid approaches that present new opportunities for our creative profession.

New hybrids


Today's challenges in Architecture and Engineering arise from an ever more complex network of boundary conditions, which often address apparently contradicting environmental, social and economic aspects. Within this context, we may not find a single best solution for a construction type or planning method to solve these challenges. In pursuit of efficient solutions for both digital modelling and the actual construction, we are discovering hybrid approaches as new opportunities for our creative profession. Julian will discuss how all factors come into play within a project and the management of all aspects of a particular project. The various key stakeholders involved - architect, engineer, builder etc. How do they come together and what mutual methods do they use. 

Klemens Sitzmann: 

10am - 11am 

BIO: Klemens Sitzmann is an architect and artist, born in South Tyrol (Italy), and lives and practices in Berlin.

As a computational design expert, he worked on international projects at Asymptote Architecture New York, GRAFT Architects Berlin, and BlocherPartners in Berlin. Holistic architectural concepts and cohesive design are at the center of every project.

In his career, has always been interested in the theory and tectonics of form. The specific shape of an object is considered the primary carrier of information and defines its character. 

Besides his professional work, he satisfies his interest in geometry with the creation of architectural narratives, an expedition into a world of pure form & composition, partly created by hand, partly generated by algorithms. 

In reciprocity of human input and computational logic, his work formulates a speculative outlook on the formal language of the future.

Talk Topic: 

Drawing with Architecture

Klemens will discuss how to project manage using various methods of architectural communication within an organisation. 

The talk will discuss the intersections of architecture, art and visual communication. It applies insights and theories from philosophy and sociology to the process of drawing form. 

Klemens will be guiding you through his personal development from photorealistic renderings to abstract drawing as methods of architectural communication. The talk will present a series of conceptual architectural projects ranging from the near to the deep future. 

They are architectural speculations that operate on the philosophical implications of a changing technological environment, where humankind ceases to be the dominating force on our planet and ever more potent algorithms shifting the power dynamics. 

The compositions of forms created in this process are visualized in a particular way that aims to capture this speculative outlook on this particular future. 


Niknaz Atafi

BIO: Niknaz received her undergraduate degree from the Baha’i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE) in Iran. BIHE was founded in 1987 in response to the Irainan government’s policy of denying Baha’is access to higher education. She received her M.arch from UC Berkeley in 2014, and has been practicing architecture in the bay area California both as a design professional as well as the design technology director.

Her background as an architectural designer, as well as her interest in using emerging technologies and new tools to improve the built environment, along with her lifelong passion for advancement of human rights and access to resources for all, finally came together when she launched aec+tech, the first online platform / marketplace exclusively dedicated to featuring the latest AEC tools & technologies and companies that use them.  Aecplustech.com is a growing community for sharing and discovering the applications of AEC emerging technologies through real-world projects.

Niknaz is a member of AIA San Francisco design technology committee. She has been developing curriculum and teaching architecture courses online to Bahai students in Iran who continue to be deprived of access to universities in their own country.

Talk Topic:

Niknaz will talk about her newly launched platform aec+tech (www.aecplustech.com), its goals and vision with respect to her background and where she is professionally coming from. 

aecplustech is an online platform / marketplace that features the use of the latest AEC tools / technologies in the AEC industry. It allows the users -- both tech innovators looking for companies interested in their products, as well as AEC professionals looking for the right tools for their projects-- keep up with and compare the most popular technologies applicable to their projects. (Including energy modeling software, project management SaaS, generative design plug-ins, construction technologies & many more) Niknaz will talk about how to document plans, projects using the latest technology. 

Ferda Kolatan:

BIO: Ferda Kolatan is an architect, author, Founding Director of New York-based studio, SU11 and Associate Professor of Practice at University of Pennsylvania. Ferda has lectured widely and taught design, fabrication, and theory courses at institutions such as Columbia University, SCI-Arc, Pratt Institute, RWTH Aachen, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Washington University, CCA, UCAM, University of British Columbia, and Cornell University.  Since its establishment in 1999,  su11 architecture+design has operated on multiple design fronts with interests and expertise ranging from building design to interiors, installations, and products. Over the past 15 years SU11 has been widely recognized as one of the leading design firms of its generation with projects featuring in venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, PS1 and Carnegie Museum of Art to name just a few.
